How to Design Clothes in Procreate

Designing clothes in Procreate is easiest when you build the sketch in layers. You can start with a croquis, draw the garment silhouette, add construction details, apply fabric texture and finish with color and accessories.

Start with a croquis or pose

A fashion croquis gives you proportion and posture. Lower the opacity of the croquis layer and draw clothing on a new layer above it. This helps you focus on design instead of redrawing the figure each time.

Block the silhouette

Before adding details, decide the main shape of the garment. Is it fitted, oversized, structured, flowing, cropped or layered? Silhouette is the first thing people notice in a fashion sketch.

Separate each garment layer

Keep tops, skirts, trousers, shoes and accessories on different layers. This makes it easier to move, recolor or adjust one piece without affecting the full outfit.

Add construction details

Use seams, hems, pockets, collars, cuffs and closures to make the design more believable. These details show how the garment works, not only how it looks.

Add fabric and color

Use clipping masks for color and texture. This keeps fabric details inside the garment shape and lets you test different materials quickly.

Finish the look

Add shoes, bags, jewelry and styling details. A complete fashion illustration communicates the full mood of the outfit, not just the clothing item.

To speed up the process, use Procreate clothing brushes, fashion croquis templates and the Premium Fashion Bundle.
