How to Draw Fashion Illustrations in Procreate

Procreate is one of the easiest ways to create fashion illustrations on iPad, especially when you use a clear workflow. The goal is not to make every sketch perfect from the beginning. The goal is to build the outfit in layers so you can adjust pose, silhouette, fabric and details without restarting.

1. Start with a fashion pose template

Begin with a body pose or fashion croquis template. This gives your illustration proportion and structure. Lower the opacity of the pose layer so it works as a guide, then create a new layer above it for the clothing sketch.

2. Block the garment silhouette

Before adding details, draw the main clothing shape. Focus on the silhouette: fitted, oversized, structured, flowing, cropped or layered. In fashion illustration, the silhouette communicates the concept before the details do.

3. Use separate layers for clothing pieces

Keep tops, skirts, trousers, shoes and accessories on separate layers. This makes it easier to move, erase, recolor and adjust individual pieces without damaging the whole illustration.

4. Add seams, folds and construction lines

Once the shape works, add seams, hems, collars, cuffs, pockets and folds. These small details make the sketch look intentional and help communicate how the garment is built.

5. Add fabric texture

Use texture brushes or pattern layers to suggest fabric. Knitwear, leather, lace, denim and satin should not all look the same. Even a subtle texture can make a simple sketch feel more professional.

6. Add color palettes

Create a palette before coloring. This keeps the collection consistent and helps you avoid random color choices. Use clipping masks when you want to color inside a garment shape without redrawing the outline.

7. Finish with accessories

Shoes, bags, jewelry and small styling details can change the entire mood of a fashion illustration. Add these near the end, after the main garment is already clear.

8. Export for portfolio or client presentation

When the illustration is finished, export a high-resolution PNG or JPG. If you are preparing a portfolio page, keep the background clean and make sure the outfit is easy to read at small sizes.
