Procreate Fashion Flats: How to Sketch Technical Clothing Designs

Fashion flats are clear technical drawings that show clothing without a posed fashion figure. They are useful for communicating garment shape, construction, seams and details. Procreate can be a practical tool for creating clean fashion flats on iPad.

Start with a clean outline

Draw the garment shape first. Keep the outline simple and readable. A fashion flat should explain the design clearly, not look like a finished editorial illustration.

Use symmetry when possible

For centered garments, Procreate's drawing guides can help keep both sides balanced. This is useful for shirts, dresses, trousers and jackets.

Add seams and construction

Use separate layers for seams, topstitching, pockets, collars, cuffs and closures. Clean construction details make the flat more useful for presentation and production conversations.

Keep fabric texture subtle

Texture can help show material, but it should not hide the construction. Use light texture for denim, knit, lace or leather and keep the main garment readable.

Create front and back views

When needed, create both front and back views of the garment. Use the same scale and line weight so the design feels consistent.

Use fashion brushes to speed up details

Brushes and templates can speed up repeated elements like stitches, zippers, buttons, pockets and garment outlines. This is especially useful when building a full collection.
